The School Team Does Not Participate in Collegial Conversations: Scenario

Principal Keria holds staff meetings but does not encourage collaboration or collegiality. She does not share school improvement data with the team or acknowledge successes. The teachers say that they hear more negative at staff meetings than successes, but believe that something surely must be going well at the school.
Instruction coach Sam also does not acknowledge successes or encourage collaboration within his team. He meets with each teacher individually and does not encourage more veteran teachers to work with other, less experienced teachers. Sam is impressed with Teacher Naani’s classroom and decides to observe.
Naani is frustrated with the lack of positive collaboration at the school. She resists having Sam and Keria in her classroom to observe. When Sam and Keria do provide feedback, Naani does not incorporate it. She leaves each day feeling frustrated. When Naani is invited to discuss successes and challenge with a peer school, she declines because she feels like she has nothing to share.
