Explicit Instruction
Explicit Instruction
Explicit instruction (EI) was described in 2011 by Anita Archer and Charles Hughes in their book Explicit Instruction: Effective and Efficient Teaching, and is based on educational research with all types of students.
Explicit instruction elaborates on the principles underpinning effective teaching. It uses a lesson format that progresses from an opening that involves activating prior knowledge and explaining the lesson objective, to a main phase that uses an “I do, We do, You do” structure to deliver new content, and concludes with a reflection and connection.
